Done and done!

Filed under: The Beginning, Gadget for Dad — WiseDad @ 3:20 pm

The quest for ‘baby stuff’ continues.  The wife and I were online last night, and every night leading up to last night, searching for the right stroller.  I am happy to say that we have found the one for us and the decision to purchase has been made.  So, why did we leave the store without buying?  Good question.  Apparently we need to go back home and check out all the color options and combinations on the company website as well as optional equipment.  The company is Bugaboo and the stroller is called the Cameleon.  This is a great low profile, masculine, easy to push, foldable, cool looking stroller.  I’m not an expert but this is probably the most versatile stroller out there.

All said and done this is the one:

cameleon

Now, this thing has many colors and features so go to my Forums page to learn more.  One other thing to mention here is that you can get an adapter to use either the Graco or Peg Perego car seats with this stroller. Sweet!

The store that we found the stroller at is called Princess & the Pea and they are located in Edmonton.

Now go check out the Forum for more specs on this little unit.

New Category

Filed under: The Beginning — WiseDad @ 5:24 pm

I have added the catgory ‘What’s Cookin'’ to have a place to post recipes. In an effort to try new things for supper other than KD. Don’t get me wrong KD will always have a place in the dinner line up. The idea is to try new things and share the recipes that I enjoy. So if you have a recipe that you would like to share just send admin an email and I would be glad to post it.

If you are not the best person in the kitchen not to worry. Many of the recipes I share with you will either be on the BBQ or easily altered to be cooked on the barbie. Let’s be honest the BBQ is perhaps mans best culinary tool. What’s this, you don’t have a BBQ. For those of you without mans best cooking tool you should drop everything and go get one. Try either a Weber or a Broil King for some pretty good quality since you will be cooking on it most of the year. Visit Flavours of Canada for some BBQ recipes to get you started.

There will also be an effort to share recipes that are Canadian like stuff from the Rebar cookbook. Rebar is a vegetarian restaurant in Victoria, British Columbia. Delicious! Check back often for some new ideas and to share your best recipe.

It’s farmer sausage and buns for us tonight with a skiff of Grey Poupon…of course.

Happy cookin’

Extreme potty training

Filed under: The Beginning — WiseDad @ 10:45 am

This story comes from a friend who knows a friend that has a friend that tried the following method of potty training.  Perhaps more common in Africa or India.  I will refer to this method as the ‘Poo Vibe (PV)’ training method.  The method itself is quite simple and has very little impact on the environment.  It also takes a parent that is very much in touch with their babies vibe.

To get started you will need a baby sling/wrap and a baby, preferably your own.  You can start this method as early as you want but make sure you are not wearing your best shirt.  Basically you put the baby in the sling as close to your body as possible.  If you are consistent and able to carry the baby everywhere you will become in-tune with your babies vibes.  The idea is that you will be able to feel the PV from the little one and react accordingly.  When you feel the PV you simply lift the baby out of the sling and over the toilet.  Sounds easy enough and no diapers required.

I do however have a few concerns.  It will probably take you a while to become in tune with the PV and until then you will be pooed on.  Is pooed a word?  Anyway,  if I understand correctly infants are not eating solids and therefor it does not ‘pass’ as a solid.  That could get messy.  What about pee?  I’m guessing there is not much warning.  What if you can’t get to the toilet in time?  You then have two options, have them soil the sling or whip them out and have them go where ever you are.  This either means a very smelly sling or a ‘cleanup in aisle 4.’ This makes the PV method of toilet training a challenge and not for everyone.  You may want to do a trial run on a camping trip before attempting it in public places.
You don’t see this method used much or at all in Canada for obvious reasons.  I do wish the best of luck to the friend of my friends friend with this method of potty training.   Do you have any potty training methods or stories that you want to share?  Post them in my Forum discussions page.

Check back this weekend and you will find a new category on my site, unrelated to the PV story.

Have a great weekend.

Movie time

Filed under: The Beginning — WiseDad @ 11:40 am

A quick movie guide for the weekend.

‘Souvenir of Canada’ by Douglas Coupland, author of Generation X adn Jpod. This is based on his book about what makes Canadians, Canadians. It follows his journey of this question as he builds a “Canada House” complete with Oopiks, Terry foxs sock, bilingual cereal boxes. It’s an interesting story and a definate renter this weekend.

The second movie is ‘Black Coffee,’ a drama documentary type movie. It’s Canadian made and is a three part series that chronicles coffees origins and it’s spread over five continents. There is a revolution, contraversy, creativity, business and slavery. It’s very interesting to see how this legal drug has ‘grown’ over the years. Did you know that coffee is the second most commonly traded commodity after oil?

Go ahead and rent these two movies. You won’t be disappointed

Lub-Dub Lub-Dub Lub-Dub

Filed under: The Beginning — WiseDad @ 2:50 pm

Visit number two to the doctor proved to be an exciting one.  We got to hear the little ones heart beat…lub-dub…lub-dub…lub-dub.  This is the moment that you start to breath normal again.  For a minute of two while the doctor rubs her instrument on the belly you hold your breath.  Waiting to hear the sound of life.  Waiting…waiting…then the doctor says, ‘don’t worry’ followed by an uncomfortable giggle.  That’s when you start to worry.  Then at that moment a very faint sound of a heart beat appears and all the tension in the room begins to ease.  That little heart is working pretty hard.  Some thing like 145-150 beats a minute.  That’s like you or I doing a moderate workout 24 hours a day.  Alas all is well.  The next step is the structural ultrasound in a month or so.  Read more on this in my FORUM section.

Check back tomorrow for a couple of movie reviews.  You will want to run out and rent these this weekend.

Mmm…turkey sandwiches

Filed under: The Beginning — WiseDad @ 8:30 pm

It’s hard to beat the sandwich made with left over turkey from Thanksgiving.  My favorite is the addition of apple sauce, cranberry jelly and stuffing.  It’s the whole meal put between two pieces of bread.

Now, has anyone ordered the hypnosis cd’s?  I have decided that going for a run may prove to be a better solution for myself.  The cd’s are also more expensive than I thought.  I should be able to bring things under control before the next big eating festivity.  That would be Christmas.

The weekend was a relaxing one.  Found time to go out to a couple of cross-biking races here in Edmonton.  They were fun to watch and for a moment I considered racing.  It was a very short moment and I quickly realized how much pain I would be in if I were to race.  Maybe next time.  The cross-biking looks like a fun event and if you ever hear of a race in your area you should go check it out.

Pregnancy, good times.  The wife is now entering the 15th week of being pregnant and all is well.  No morning sickness at all.  Not even once.  I had heard some stories and was very much feeling sorry for her but she prevailed and denied the porcelain gods of any events.  Over the past several months I have learned that she will have cravings for certain foods.  Very specific cravings and when it comes it needs to be satisfied pronto.  This is not a bad thing because you also get to indulge.  You must do the right thing and eat with her even if this means having a cheeseburger at midnight.

Well I must stop here because it’s time for raspberries and ice cream.

Enjoy your turkey sandwiches this week.

Gobble, Gobble, Gobble

Filed under: The Beginning — WiseDad @ 3:05 pm

The long weekend is here!

Kicking the weekend off in true fashion with a little CFL. Settle into your favorite chair with a soda, 2nd place Calgary is at BC who is currently in 1st. This is going to be an action packed game. Maybe we’ll get another lateral-toss play like the one last weekend from the Riders. Make sure you have enough soda to last you the whole game. You don’t want to have to make that 4th quarter beverage run.

Several days of visiting, fun and some down time due in part to high quantities of Tryptophan in your system. But what does this weekend really mean? While most will be spending time with families and enjoying a 30lb turkey, others may not be as fortunate. Please find time to think about those who are less fortunate. To learn or to do more visit this website. Here is some history on Thanksgiving to help the kids understand what it’s all about.
Recipes for the weekend meals to help you cook that turkey to perfection.
Here is a link to fun stuff for the kids to do this weekend while you cook.

When the weekend is all said and done it’s time to get back in shape. Some of us will get right back into the workout routine. Others will not, for the man who is not so inclined to go for a run there may be an alternative. This method claims to help you lose weight “effortlessly and naturally.” Does this weight loss system actually work? More on this next week.
Have a good weekend, Gobble-Gobble-Gobble.

October…what a great month.

Filed under: The Beginning — WiseDad @ 5:50 pm

Let’s see what October brings upon us:

  1. Oktoberfest provides the ideal month-long beer drinking fest.
  2. Halloween, do you know where your costume is? What about kids costumes.
  3. Thanksgiving feast time. A little turkey, sweet potatoes, gravy and cranberries.
  4. Daylight saving time ends.
  5. Fall colors are everywhere. It’s a glorious visual feast all across Canada.

This month is packed full of excitement isn’t it. Every body is trying to get outside to enjoy those last few warm days. Putting in a small but commendable effort to clean up the yard and chill on the back deck while BBQ’n a nice fillet, all while celebrating Oktoberfest of course. I wonder if the Robomow can clean up leaves while it mows.

If I recall correctly snow usually falls this month across most of the prairies. For any American readers out there this is the time we usually build our Igloos for the winter months. Although most will just turn the heat up in the house instead of building the Igloo. All joking aside, Igloos do exist up in Northern Canada and are pretty cool. Seriously though has anyone ever stayed in an Igloo? What about that Ice Castle Hotel? Now that would be an interesting trip. Make sure you wear your hot pockets down you know where.
Enjoy October and all it has to offer as it’s a great month indeed.

The Weekly Gadget

Stuff for dad…and baby! But more for dad when it’s babies nap time.

Check out this fantastic little unit!

The Friendly Robotics Robomow.

robomow

Step 1:Push button

Step 2:Put on lawn

Step 3:Program to go once a week.

I love it! I wonder what kind of a job it does? With the 5800rpm blade speed it probably cuts through everything. This thing even returns to the docking station automatically after mowing for recharging. This is a must have for those with up to a 16,000sqft lawn and limited time. Mind you, most of us would probably stand there and watch it mow. LOL
